All the things to know about the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR presented today by Apple.
– – –
Tonight Apple will hold an event at its headquarters in Cupertino, California: as usual, no official information has been provided, but for several years the company has been organizing a presentation in this period to illustrate its innovations, and especially its new models of iPhone. The event can be followed by the 19 Italian live streaming on the Apple website and – for the first time – on Twitter. In recent weeks, many predictions have circulated on what Apple might announce, and among other things there has been talk of three new iPhone models and some other news related to Macs and Apple Watches.
New iPhones
Last year Apple presented iPhone X, an important change from the point of view of the design and of some features of its smartphones. This year it should present a version of the iPhone X practically identical to the previous one, with a 5.8-inch screen and some internal changes, probably to make the smartphone even more powerful. To the model we already know, however, another one should be added a little larger and with a 6.5-inch screen, for those who prefer larger smartphones (they are in great demand especially in part of the Asian market). Adding a larger device, some say it will be called the iPhone XS Max (and not Plus), could lead to a slight price reduction for the regular iPhone X.
Apple may also announce a third phone with features similar to those of the iPhone X, more colors and a 6.1-inch screen, but with a lower price due to the fact that it has a rear camera with only one lens, an LCD screen and not OLED and be less powerful. It could cost between 600 and 700 euros, and be a sort of middle ground between the current iPhone X and iPhone 8.
These three new iPhones should use an A12 processor, an evolution of the current A11, especially dedicated to performing tasks related to “machine learning” more quickly, in the context of artificial intelligence systems. The cameras should not undergo particular changes and improvements, while there may be some news regarding battery capacity and their charging times. The 6.1-inch model could be devoid of 3D Touch, a function little used by users and a bit left to itself by Apple, in order to keep the price of the new smartphone lower.
Apple Watch
For some years now, Apple has always been presenting the new Apple Watch series during the September event, and it should do the same this year. The new Apple Watch Series 4 will keep the two formats available so far, but thanks to a reduction of the bezel of the dials, the screens should be larger. The internal sensors for detecting movement and physical activity should receive some updates, in order to collect data with more precision, starting with a function for carrying out an electrocardiogram. There are hypotheses on the possibility that the lateral crown and physical buttons of the Apple Watch are replaced by touch versions, such as the “Home” button on the iPhone 7 and later (it is not a real button, but when pressed it gives sensory feedback as if it were it were).
iPad Pro
Apple hasn't updated the iPad Pro, the largest and most powerful version of its tablets in a while, so today's event could be the perfect time to announce some news. There is talk of two new iPad Pro, one with an 11-inch screen and another larger with a 12.9-inch display. It is said that Apple has worked hard to reduce the black frame around the screen, a bit like it did on the iPhone X. From the front it may have removed the “Home” button and replaced it with “Face ID”, the system to unlock the device. via facial recognition.
iOS 12
We already know practically everything about Apple's new operating system for mobile devices: it was presented last June and does not bring great news, apart from a new section useful for monitor the usage times of your iPhone. Apple had announced that iOS 12 would be available by the fall, so it should announce the date for its release. As always, the update will be free for all owners of compatible iPhones and iPads.
macOS Mojave
Apple will also announce the release date of macOS Mojave, the new version of its operating system for Macs. The company has been working to refine and improve features available from time, such as that of file previews and to create screenshots. Some apps typically available on iOS, such as Stocks and News, will also arrive on macOS Mojave. Other new features include better privacy management options and a completely redesigned App Store.
AirPods
Not much has been said about it in recent weeks, but some speculate that Apple will also present a new version of its wireless headphones at its event. AirPods 2 are supposed to be water resistant (you can't swim in it, but run in the rain can), equipped with a longer-lasting battery, and some noise-canceling solutions. Not everyone is convinced that the new version of the headphones may already be ready for this year, so they could be announced in 2019.
AirPower
Apple should also give some information on its wireless charging station for iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods. He announced it a year ago, saying it would arrive in the future, but nothing more was heard of it. So far the owners of iPhones and other Apple devices have got away with the classic cables, or with other compatible wireless charging bases.
New Macs
Apple has long been rumored to have been working on the expected updates for the MacBook Air and Mac Mini, among its most successful computers. The news should concern the addition of more powerful processors, which consume less, and screens with Retina technology. However, it is not clear whether Apple intends to present the new models already today, considering that it usually prefers to keep the attention only on one type of product, in this case the most profitable iPhones. For the new MacBook Air and Mini it may therefore be necessary to wait a few weeks, until October for a separate presentation.
