Artificial intelligence (AI) is present in more and more fields and, of course, defense is one of them. The Pentagon is testing a tool that analyzes data from different global sources and, thanks to an advanced algorithm, could predict future events days in advance .
This idea is being promoted by the US Northern Command. The head of this component, Glen VanHerck, told a press conference that the experiment, called Global Information Dominance Experiments (GIDE), will allow to make decisions key strategies with the help of AI.
GIDE gathers data collected by satellites, radars, submarines, cyber and intelligence elements, and shares it in a cloud. In this way, all this information is available to a Pentagon's machine learning and artificial intelligence system that can analyze and process it quickly.
“Keep in mind that this is not new information. It is information that today is simply not analyzed and processed until later in the time cycle, so to speak (…) all we are doing is taking it, sharing it and putting it available when before “, assures VanHerck, according to ZDNet.
An artificial intelligence for the Pentagon to act on time

Details about the tests have not been made public, however the Pentagon has provided some data on past experiments. One of them consisted of simulating the takeover of a crucial site. The artificial intelligence model, thanks to a series of patterns detected, was able to recommend protective actions.
The algorithms could analyze the average number of cars in a parking lot at enemy locations or identify how many planes are parked on a runway. In case of detecting a change, the AI could launch a warning. This would allow the Pentagon to act proactively , rather than wait for the episodes to occur, according to the commander.
