Sony Pictures Entertainment released the trailer for Morbius, another of the films that the production company develops based on Marvel stories. With Venom: there will be slaughter still in a movie theater and Spider-man: no way home scheduled for December, Sony redoubles its bet within the genre of superhero movies. Although, this time, it is not one of them but a villain played by Jared Leto: Morbius.
This film will tell the story of Michael Morbius, a doctor who is initially interested in noble causes but, after some circumstances, mutates towards something different. This transformation leads him to discover different abilities. Part of that process is discovered in the Morbius trailer, when actor Jared Leto seems to be talking to himself and wondering “what else can I do?”
Although from the outset this film has not been directly related to the Spiderverse, much of what is anticipated seems to indicate that sooner or later it will connect. The doubts lie in that, until Venom: there will be slaughter, Sony had been developing the story of this antihero without connecting him with Peter Parker. Will the same happen this time? Maybe that depends on how successful the movie is at the box office. Although, from a narrative point of view, it would make perfect sense to make an origin movie about Morbius and then connect him with one of his main adversaries, Spider-Man.
The trailer for Morbius
The Morbius trailer provides more information on the plot of the film. Under the direction of Daniel Espinosa, Jared Leto will play a character who frequently alternates between the good and bad sides of life. In essence, Morbius is a vampire and as such needs blood to feed. What is the detail here? That Michael Morbius retains some of his interest in helping people, the one that led him to become a doctor . So, you have to solve that question: how to feed yourself without endangering the lives of innocents?
Morbius is a Nobel Prize-winning biochemist. Due to an illness, he tried to cure himself from an experiment with bats. The result? A failure. The doctor ended up turning into a bat variant. The Morbius trailer offers a couple of obvious nods to Spider-Man productions. It is not just a mural dedicated to the heroic version of Peter Parker; also makes an appearance Michael Keaton, who played Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming (Jon Watts, 2017).
They are not the only relationships that can be drawn between one and another character . Even the sneak peek offers a joke in connection with another of the Sony-developed movies, when Morbius introduces himself saying, “I'm Venom.” The presentation of the Morbius trailer invites you to think that the premiere date, scheduled for January 28, 2022, will remain. Initially, the film would be released in July 2020. But, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sony and Marvel rescheduled the release.
