USB-C is a widely used standard. And not only because the European Union wants to make it mandatory for all electronic devices for personal use, but also because of its wide adoption. However, USB-C is not without its problems. The connector is more than a connector, forgive the redundancy, and houses different types of protocols.

For this reason, users find themselves with connectors and cables USB-C charging only, USB 3.0, USB 4.0, data only, mixed, with integrated Thunderbolt connections, with video outputs, ethernet, or all at the same time. .. And even power up to 240 watts.

This makes it a bit difficult to differentiate and be clear about what each cable can be used for. In this context, the USB-IF , the authority that regulates the connector and its standards, has announced that it is going to implement a special labeling to make life easier for the user.

A common labeling for all USB-C

The new logos will clearly indicate support for 240 W, 40 Gbps data transfer, or both. These capabilities come hand in hand with protocols such as USB 4, USB Power Delivery 3.1 and the specification 2.1 from the USB-C port.

The agency has not yet announced when they will begin to make these new classifications mandatory on product packaging. However, it does state that it will be mandatory for all USB-IF certified USB-C cable or charger manufacturers.

With our updated logos, consumers can easily identify the USB4 performance and USB Power Delivery capabilities of certified USB-C cables

USB-IF Press Release Although everything related to USB-C is still a bit confusing, these new logos are great news for users and for the industry as a whole, especially given the variety of protocols and energy profiles that can hold a USB-C cable. And especially, to make life easier for the consumer now that Type C is the standard for the entire technology industry.
