TIM joins Vodafone and prepares to discontinue 3G technology, the standards of which include UMTS, in favor of upgrading 4G and 5G.
During the financial results conference held last February, the company announced its strategic plan for the years between 2021 and 2023, which included the development of 4G, 5G, FWA and FTTx technologies aimed at resolving the digital divide in Italy. In this perspective, the communication about the preparation of the closure of 3G in the course of 2022 is insinuated.
The frequencies that up to now have been used for 3G will be reused in due course in conjunction with those already existing for 4G to enhance the latter and in the future for 5G. We underline that the UMTS and UMTS 2100 Mhz licenses expire on December 31, 2021 . The report also states that the possible end of service date for GSM (2G) technology in Italy will be 31 December 2029.
Finally, by virtue of what has been learned, the virtual operators under the network TIM could receive VoLTE. According to some rumors it would seem that in Kena Mobile we are already thinking about the activation of this service, but there is still no official news.
