Today Apple presents the new iPhone 12

The new iPhone 12 will be presented at 7pm (Italian time) by Apple, during a special event organized at the company's headquarters in Cupertino, near San Francisco. The presentation, which will be streaming and without public due to the limitations due to the coronavirus, is rather expected because it will finally allow official information on the new models. Apple has in fact accumulated some delay compared to other years, due to the pandemic, and has therefore postponed its traditional event for iPhones, which usually takes place in September, by about a month.

Today's event is called “Hi, Speed”, literally “hello, speed”, but with a pun where “hi” can also be interpreted as “high”, and therefore “high speed”. The title probably refers to the fact that some of the new iPhone 12 will be compatible with 5G, the new standard for surfing online at high speed through the latest generation cellular networks, still under development.

Despite the delays, information and rumors have been circulating for weeks on how the new iPhones 12 are made and what they do. As per tradition, Apple has neither confirmed nor denied the details disclosed so far, waiting to officially present its news this evening.

Four models
According to major tech sites, Apple will introduce four new iPhone models. They will have a design with sharp edges, which will be a little reminiscent of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5, and with screens of different sizes depending on the model. The smallest should have a 5.4-inch one, an intermediate model should be 6.1-inch, then there should be another 6.1-inch model, but with more features and finally a high-end iPhone 12 from 6, 7 inches.

Names
A lot of information has circulated on how new iPhones should be categorized and distinguished. Most sites agree on these assumptions:
• iPhone 12 Mini (5.4 inches);
• iPhone 12 (6.1 inches);
• iPhone 12 Pro (6.1-inch and with more features);
• iPhone 12 Pro Max (6.7-inch).

5G
Apple should introduce 5G on all four models, unlike what was previously speculated about the possibility that the feature was only available on iPhones 12 more expensive.

Screens
The new models will be equipped with OLED screens, a circumstance that would sanction the progressive abandonment of LCDs. OLED screens allow for better color rendering, higher contrast and lower battery consumption, but are generally more expensive than the LCDs that have been used by Apple for years, in their Retina variants.

Camera
iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 should have one camera with wide angle and another with ultra wide angle lens.

IPhones 12 Pro should have a wide-angle camera, a wide-angle lens, and a third telephoto camera for up to 4x zoom.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max should have a similar set of cameras to the iPhone 12 Pro, but with the ability to use the telephoto lens for up to 5x magnification.

The two most advanced models will also have a laser sensor (LIDAR), to detect the depth of field and that of objects, useful for improving the effects of augmented reality (i.e. the addition of virtual objects in real scenarios framed by the smartphone). Something similar has been available since last March on the new iPad Pro.

Processor
The new iPhones will have the latest evolution of the processors developed by Apple for their mobile devices. They should be called A14 and have characteristics similar to those used in the new iPad Air recently presented.

No charger
As anticipated in September during another event, Apple will no longer provide chargers for its mobile devices, and therefore also for iPhones . The company explained that this solution reduces the size of the packages and the environmental impact of its operations. The new iPhones will still be equipped with a USB cable and can be charged with the chargers you already have, by connecting them to a computer or using wireless charging systems. Apple will still sell a charger separately, for those who still need it.

Other
During today's event, Apple could also announce a new HomePod, smaller and cheaper than the version sold so far, which is used to listen to the music and use Siri as a home assistant. The new HomePod Mini is expected to cost around $ 99 compared to $ 299 for the larger model, but it's still unclear whether it will be available in countries other than the US, including Italy.

Apple could also announce some news related to Apple TV, its device to connect to the TV to see streaming content and their photos on iCloud. There were also news about the possibility of new wireless headphones and a GPS tracker, so as not to lose your belongings.
