Home Reviews ,,,,, The backpack is not just a bag to be prepared on the spot with everything you need before going to school or leaving for a trip. In many cases, due to its better distribution of weights through carrying on the shoulders, it can be useful on holiday even in the middle of the day, for example if you buy something bulky and which you had not planned to purchase or to organize a picnic at the last minute, perhaps even while you are already on the street.
In cases like these it can be convenient to keep an empty one always ready in the pouch or in the trunk of the car and in this case Tomshoo 30L proves to be an excellent compromise from the point of view of capacity and strength in relation to the dimensions. For only 11.99 euros, you can put your hand to a bag with a capacity of 30 liters that can withstand even tens of kg of weight and that, when not needed, can be folded to take up the space of a pouch pocket.
As did
The backpack arrives home in its original transformation, that of a handbag with the dimensions of about 23 x 16 x 5 centimeters that can also be easily carried by hand by means of a handle. This bag is closed by means of a zipper which, once opened, reveals the actual backpack folded inside.
Extracting it is a matter of a moment, just as putting it back in its place is just as simple as it is sufficient to fold it over and over again until it can be easily inserted inside the lower pocket. Yes, because the starting bag is nothing more than one of the pockets of the backpack used “backwards” *: the zipper is in fact accompanied by two tabs, one internal and one external, which allow access in both modes. When you switch from “backpack mode” to “handbag mode” simply turn the pocket over and adjust its use between one and the other.
Once extracted, the backpack is very light but equally robust . The feeling is given by the fabric with which it is entirely composed, that is nylon waterproof and tear-resistant capable of withstanding – assures the manufacturer – up to 20 kg in weight . Now, this data is an end in itself because, although it is possible to load it to the limit, it will be difficult to bear this weight. On the market there are trekking backpacks with sturdy backs and shoulder straps and a whole skeleton designed to withstand large loads by adequately distributing the weight along the entire back of the wearer. However, this is not the case with the backpack in question and whose maximum weight supported must instead be better understood as a high degree of resistance to tearing by heavy and perhaps angular objects.
In fact, one backrest is missing, as are the shoulder straps, although they are really resistant (and breathable ), due to the perforation that characterizes them almost entirely), are very thin. In some tests we tried to load it with different objects that we had at home but already exceeding 5 kg the pain in the shoulders was immediately felt after a few minutes that we were holding it on our shoulders, confirming that we are faced with an emergency solution and not an everyday backpack.
To the eye, the seams also seemed excellent: trying to tug it near the seams, we did not hear any tearing nor did we detect any weakening of the fabric. The hinges are also very good, wide and sliding, with zip and metal tabs. In addition to the length of the shoulder straps, the thickness of the backpack can also be adjusted: thanks to two practical side bands it can in fact be narrowed, adapting the contents to the best in all those cases in which the backpack is not completely filled, minimizing the movements of the objects stored in it.
The pockets
The backpack offers a very large main pocket , there is also space for a 15–16 '' laptop together with a beach towel, a baby carrier and several other items. The upper secondary pocket is large enough to accommodate an iPad mini along with other items while the lower pocket (the one that turns into the bag to collect the backpack when it folds up on itself) can accommodate a 6 '' e-reader with still space for a wallet and other small accessories. Inside the larger pocket, on the upper side, there is a pocket of small size, sufficient to hold an iPhone, a bunch of keys or a little other, while on the sides there are two mesh pockets to accommodate a bottle of water (both 500ml, and a larger 1.5 liter, also if the latter hardly fits) or a resealable umbrella.
Conclusions
It is the backpack to leave in the trunk of the car. It takes up very little space and when the need arises it is ready in an instant. As there is no sturdy backrest (for obvious reasons of portability and foldability) you just need to take care to prepare the accessories in the main pocket with knowledge of the facts, preferring perhaps large and soft objects, such as a beach towel on the bottom, and instead leaving cookware or other smaller and more angular accessories in the outermost edge of the backpack, thus avoiding discomfort when carrying it on the shoulder. If you don't charge it excessively, it can really make a difference and improve part of our days, whether it's an extra purchase or a last-minute out-of-town trip.
