Towards a unified standard of extension development: Google, Apple, Microsoft and Mozilla are already at work

The companies that develop the most popular web browsers, namely Google (Chrome), Apple (Safari), Microsoft (Edge) and Mozilla (Firefox), I'm working on creating a development standard for extensions.

These four giants have created the WebExtensions Community Group (WECG) , a group that aims to simplify the creation of extensions for developers , specifying core functionality and API, and outline an architecture capable of improving the performance and security of extensions .

The group also stated: “we do not aim to specify every aspect of the web extension platform. We want browsers to continue innovating and delivering APIs that can serve as the basis for further improvement of the web extension platform ”. Put simply, we are not working on a system to create universal extensions, but we are trying to simplify the work of developers by defining common guidelines to follow.
