In September, Twitter piloted the automated account labels to make it easier to know when a account was actually a bot . Apparently the experiment turned out to be a success , because starting Wednesday Twitter will allow developers to add tags to their automated accounts . The label will appear on the account profile and under the account name in the feed.
According to Twitter spokesperson Celeste Carswell , the labels will be available for automated accounts created by developers using the Twitter API and account owners will need to consent when applying the label to your account,
There are many ways a bot could be useful , for example Twitter's marketing material shows a local weather bot. Unfortunately, it's not hard to imagine that a bot account could be used for malicious things , but on this point Carswell states that automated accounts are subject to Twitter's automated accounts policy and the general rules of Twitter. An interesting point is that Twitter will not check accounts that choose to apply the new labels , although people may report accounts they believe may violate the rules.
