Uber has struck a deal to compensate the family of the woman who was hit and killed in Arizona

Uber, the large chauffeur-driven transportation company, has struck a deal with the family of the woman killed in Arizona by one of her self-driving cars on March 18. The deal – details of which have not been disclosed – will allow Uber to avoid a lawsuit brought by the family. The lawyer representing the husband and daughter of the murdered woman said that the two will no longer talk about the incident, because they consider the matter closed.

The incident in which the woman – 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg – died took place on the evening of March 18 in Tempe, Arizona. The woman was crossing a street at night, in a poorly lit area, and was hit by an Uber SUV equipped with self-driving technology. A video of the incident released by the police showed that the person who was in the car and who was supposed to intervene in an emergency – as required by Uber's testing rules – was distracted shortly before the accident (although it is unlikely. that could have avoided it). After the crash, Uber suspended all of its self-driving tests in the United States.
