Watching a movie on the iPad is possible but from the bed, if you don't use a support to support it, with only your hands it is impossible not to get tired. We recently tried Ugreen 30480 particularly appreciated for two features that, to date, we have not found in any other product of this type.
First, it works with any device, from the smallest smartphone from 4 inches up to tablets with a diagonal of 11–12 inches, without forgetting e-readers if you want to use the system to read a good book with your hands behind your head. Secondly, it is characterized by two modular sections that allow you to adjust its length to take advantage of it, with minimum bulk, in any environment.
How it is made
The first part that makes up the support is the base , characterized by an extendable vice (up to about 7 centimeters) all in rigid plastic of good quality, with two rubber inserts inside to ensure a firm grip and at the same time avoid scratching the edge of the table or in general the surface to which we will decide to hang the support.
To this base it is possible to hook one or two tubular sections , both made of metal with a rubberized coating on the outside. The shortest measures around 26cm while the other is around 58cm long. If you want to use both, according to our tests for better stability it is necessary to fix the shorter one near the base and then, at the first rod, the second section. In this way it will be the shorter one, which is, among other things, more turning, to have to support the weight of the other rod, to which the tablet will then be fixed.
Whether one or two rods are hooked, at the end of these it will then be necessary to fix the clamp dedicated to locking smartphones and tablets. The coupling takes place through a ball head accompanied by a special washer to block the inclination of the plate. This too is made entirely of rather sturdy plastic with some rubber inserts to prevent smartphone or tablet from slipping off. The two fins to which the latter lock are slightly curved to improve grip and are accompanied by a large hole, the other by two smaller openings, ensuring full compatibility with the ports of any device, to which, for example, the charging cable or a pair of wired headphones can be connected during use with the holder.
Compatibility
As we said at the beginning of the review, one of the strengths of the product concerns its compatibility: we have not found any problems with our devices, starting with iPhone 7 which must necessarily be gripped by the two short sides, then passing through iPad mini 3 and iPad Air, but the extension of the clamp is such that it could even ensure the attachment of an even larger tablet, provided that one of the two sides does not exceed the Approximately 20cm in length.
Field test
We did several tests at home, hooking it to the work surface of the kitchen, the metal armrest of the sofa, the handlebar of the treadmill and the headboard of the bed, interchanging the sections according to the needs of the moment. The limit situation occurred by exploiting the support at its maximum length and hooking our iPad Air which, between the cover and tempered glass, reaches a total weight of 580 grams.
We have deliberately positioned the support in such a way that it suffered to the maximum from the weight of the tablet, but despite this it did not show signs of failure (see following photo). The sections, in fact, although they can be flexed with the strength of our hands alone, are much more rigid than those we have found in others similar supports, and this plays a fundamental role in flexural strength even with heavy devices in tow. Touching the tablet screen, the tablet swayed slightly, but the arm never folded down, allowing us to quietly watch a movie in bed without having to hold the device with our hands.
We have it also used to read some ebooks on the sofa with the Kindle and, using only the shorter section, to place iPad mini next to the computer using it as a secondary screen. The only defect of this support concerns the two aluminum components that allow you to mount the various parts together. More than once it happened to us that they got stuck under the weight of the devices hooked to the vice and we struggled a lot to be able to release them again and change the structure of the support. On some occasions we even had to rely on a pair of pliers that have irretrievably scratched part of the support.
Conclusions
We believe that Ugreen 30480 is a valid alternative to supports of this kind, especially if the goal is to ensure high compatibility with the devices to be hooked. The two removable sections make it comfortable and practical on more than one occasion while the flexibility of the temples is such as to guarantee the widest configurations while resisting the weight of the most bulky tablets.
