UMI continues to churn out smartphones on the Chinese market, all somewhat similar to each other, but with small differences that, in fact, could shift preferences from one to another other. After reviewing UMI Max, this time the Cyber Layman editorial team got to work on the PLUS model, which costs on GearBest 163.01.

The aesthetics of the devices are, in some respects, similar to the Max model, but it differs, first of all, in more rounded edges and beveled frames, which allow it to be held better in the hand. The front loses the elegant touch button with built-in LED, to make room, instead, for a large central button, similar to those used by Meizu, by placing a classic LED dot on the top.

What, at least in the first place, we liked the most about this terminal compared to the Max model is the construction. Not so much for the materials used, which are very similar between the two models, but for the attention to detail: in this Umi PLUS the side, power and volume rocker buttons are perfectly set in the frame, and do not cause vibrations or creaks. of any kind. The customizable physical button is always present on the left frame, particularly useful because it allows you to start applications on the fly, by simply pressing the button: in this way it will be possible to program the start of the Camera app, or that flashlight, in order to recall functions device you use most often. On the top only the input for the 3.5mm headphone jack, while on the bottom the USB-C connector for charging.

Aesthetically, without certainly shining for originality, UMI Plus is still a pleasant terminal, which is well handled, even if one-handed use is precluded by its dimensions, and which is certainly well built. Only the rear body, plasticky, lowers the quality of the terminal a bit, which has its most premium part in the front.

The display, a 5.5-inch unit, offnnello well-made, which does not look bad in front of higher-end terminals, and which is always clearly legible, with a brightness that is not very high, but which also allows you to easily distinguish the texts outdoors. The colors offered are quite natural and by default they can already please everyone, but thanks to the MiraVision technology it is possible to manage some elements, such as contrast, saturation, sharpness, color temperature, and other parameters.

The front button integrates a sensor for fingerprint recognition, but to be honest this is not the feature that can direct the purchase: the sensor is less precise than its brother UMI Max, with an undoubtedly lower percentage of operation, which during our tests prompted us to eliminate this type of unlocking, in favor of the more classic PIN entry. The back function, on the other hand, is very appreciable: just touch the button to go back one page, while pressing it you will immediately arrive at the Home. Equally pleasant is the button on the left frame, which can be customized and which allows you to access the desired app in one click.

UMI Plus, in terms of operation, achieves performance in line with all terminals in the same price range. Thanks to the Helio P10 Octa Core processor clocked at 1.8GHz it runs Android 6.0 well, also thanks to the 4GB of RAM, while the integrated memory is 32GB. In terms of performance, we did not find major differences with the MAX version. During everyday use we have not witnessed any kind of jamming, easily managing to carry out most of the functions, such as the use of all social networks, instant messaging apps, email reading, internet browsing, phone calls, allowing ourselves the possibility also to test some of the most popular games of the moment, such as Clash Royale. The capsule audio during conversations is good, and our interlocutor also receives a crystal clear voice. The bluetooth is a bit flawed, as indeed in many smartphones of the same price range, with an audio department that can certainly be improved. In short, the speakers are among the non-prominent components of the terminal.

What does not convince the most is always the camera department. Beyond the numbers, 13MP for the rear one and 8 for the front one, the photos are not the strong point of this UMI Plus. but photography lovers will never be able to make comparisons, even with older iPhones. Excellent, however, the bokeh effect, which can be obtained. As always, we attach below some images taken with the terminal, to let the reader appreciate the effective quality of the shots, in no case modified.

As for UMI Max, an applause must be given to the 4000 mAh battery, which leads to sera with a good 20% of remaining battery, with a very intense use, but which can also exceed 30% if you make a moderate use of the terminal. A sporadic use, on the other hand, allows more days of autonomy: the terminal in stand by consumes very little.

Conclusions

UMI Plus continues to bring the tradition of low-cost cinafonini continues, with the philosophy that remains unchanged: sufficient performance to enjoy the entire Android ecosystem, without touching the peaks of the top of the range, with a photographic department that is not exciting, but a particularly pleasant Full HD display .

It costs 163.01 euros on GearBest and can be purchased directly at this address in the different silver and gold colors.
