US telephone companies AT&T and Verizon have postponed the enabling of the new 5G frequencies near some airports

US telephone companies AT&T and Verizon have postponed the activation of the new 5G network frequencies near some US airports following widespread protests by several American airlines, according to which the new services would risk interfering with aircraft equipment and to have significant repercussions on the transport of people and goods. In line with the requests of the main airlines, AT&T and Verizon have agreed not to activate the new 5G network (the so-called C-band) within a radius of 2 miles – 3.2 kilometers – from some airports, which must be indicated by Federal Aviation Administration, the US federal aviation agency.

The agreement was reached thanks to the intervention of the administration of US President Joe Biden, according to which the activation of the new 5G in the immediate vicinity of the airports would have caused “potentially disastrous inconveniences for passenger travel, for the transport of goods and for economic recovery “. The US government has not made clear how long the introduction of the new 5G will be delayed at designated airports, but has explained that the new frequencies will be enabled in more than 90 percent of the planned areas starting Wednesday, January 19, as planned.

Telephone companies said the new frequencies had already been enabled in about forty countries without causing problems.
