Xiaomi Amazfit GTR 42 mm, unboxing and first impressions of the “reduced” version

After thoroughly testing Amazfit GTR 47 mm, we also discarded the smaller version, which takes the name of Amazfit 42 mm. If at the software level there don't seem to be important differences, there is something to say about aesthetics and dimensions. Here it is in all its glory in our unboxing and making contact.

The pack is very similar to that of the older brother. Inside a first black cardboard there is the white cardboard case, inside which the device is present. When the package is opened, the watch immediately stands out, obviously off, but on which a sticker depicting the factory watchfaces is applied. Below the clock there are two compartments, inside which the manual is available, and the battery charger.

Making contact and first impressions are obviously positive. It is a particularly elegant sport watch, finished from all points of view, well assembled and elegant, as is the older brother of 47 mm.

The aluminum alloy case is dark gray, almost black, satin, and makes the watch even more elegant, to be worn perhaps for an evening under a shirt and jacket.

Too bad, however, for the silicone strap. Our first impression is different from that of the 47 mm model in leather. The difference is really substantial. Attention, not that the silicone used is poor, indeed, it is very well made and comfortable to wear, but it seems a little out of tune with the elegance of the case and the watch in general.

Certainly the silicone strap will be better suited for sports use, which we do not recommend with the leather model. In any case, the 20mm strap can be easily replaced with any standard strap.

At first general impact, however, it seems to us that Amazfit 42 mm has all the credentials to be an excellent product, as is its older brother. Size is the element of difference that most impressed us compared to the GRT 47, and it will probably be the element that will weigh the most in the choice of whether to buy one or the other model.

We will come back with a complete review to tell you about the technical characteristics, but let's anticipate one aspect right away. The display offers a slightly lower resolution than the 47 mm model, but the smaller diagonal nullifies any possible qualitative difference. At first glance, in fact, they seem to be the same in this too.

Among the curiosities we anticipate that at the moment the first pairing between smartwatch and smartphone must take place with the Amazfit app. After the first pairing, however, Amazfit GTR 42 mm will be visible, and fully functional also on the Mi Fit app, where the watch appears with the code name HawkW.

The exact same thing also happens with the 47 mm model, which on Mi Fit will appear with the name FalconW, after having paired it for the first time via Amazfit app.
