Xiaomi Mi AirDots review, the True Wireless earphones with touch controls

Home Reviews ,,,,,In recent days we have tried Xiaomi Mi AirDots, a pair of earphones presented in November of those completely wireless, accompanied by a pocket-sized case for charging when not in use and equipped with the latest Bluetooth 5.0 technologies to be ready to work and take advantage of all the advantages of the new connectivity present in the latest generation smartphones (Galaxy S8 was the first, of the iPhones the first to have it is the latest arrival XS, XS Max and XR).

How they are done

Xiaomi Mi AirDots earphones are small and very light. What differentiates them from others of this kind is the total absence of mechanical parts: there are no buttons but an external touch surface – among other things very nice to touch due to its thin satin finish – through which different types of touch to control as many functions.

They slip into the ears by means of the common in-ear rubbers, with all the advantages and disadvantages (depending on the use that goes away) that have always distinguished this type of headphones, i.e. greater soundproofing in parallel with less comfort in use. prolonged.

The case that accompanies them is rather small and well built: there is an opaque lid with a slight transparency useful for being able to throw an eye on the LED indicator of the earphones and therefore know the charge status without having to open the case. Transparency, we specify, is really weak so in full daylight it will be difficult to notice the LEDs on while at home or at dusk it is much easier to control the earphones with the case closed.

The earphones are inserted into the special cavities and securely fastened to the contacts thanks to the powerful magnetic system, which facilitates insertion – just bring them closer to ensure that they are attracted by the magnets locking in the correct position – and keeps them glued to the case, thus avoiding disconnections accidents that would cancel the recharge.

The whole product is built well, the case gives the idea of being really sturdy and the shell that covers the earphones is smooth and pleasant to touch, giving the whole system a truly premium look.

How do they work

Putting them in your ears is easy, but they are quite striking both for the pure white color and for the size, in any case necessary to be able to incorporate all the technologies (battery, Bluetooth chip, speakers, etc.) they are equipped with.

It is not necessary to turn them on: when you unhook even a single earphone from the case they are activated and if you remove the second also they connect to each other practically instantly. For the first pairing it is necessary to disconnect the right earphone from the case, the only one enabled for Bluetooth pairing with the smartphone or device to which you intend to connect the earphones.

And to turn them off the reasoning to do is the same: you do not need to press buttons or anything else, but simply insert them into the case and they will automatically close the Bluetooth connection with the smartphone, deactivate the built-in electronic chip and start recharging the internal battery to bring it to 100%. .

How are they doing

The Xiaomi Mi AirDots seemed less exciting from an audio point of view. They sound good, very well indeed, but for the price for which they are offered, perhaps you could have expected a little more. What is certain is that Xiaomi charges for True Wireless technology and the fact of being among the first to offer a pair of earphones with Bluetooth 5.0. We have known what this means for months: in short, reduced consumption, extended operating range to 40 meters, double speed, 8x data transfer compared to 4.0, better broadcasting messaging features but also better interoperability and coexistence with other wireless technologies.

As for the audio quality, we said, the earphones sound very good, with clear highs, present mids and powerful lows. The equalization is flat, so they do not exaggerate in one or the other frequency, and the power at maximum volume is such as to allow the wearer to completely isolate themselves by eliminating external sounds even in rather noisy environments.

The touch system for the controls, on the other hand, did not satisfy us. Very often it is necessary to repeat a gesture that is not immediately recognized, especially if the fingertips are sweaty (so better to use them when moving around the city rather than during workouts in the gym) and you feel the lack of commands to skip tracks.

It is in fact possible to call the voice assistant with a double tap, pause or restart audio playback but also answer an incoming phone call with a single touch and reject a call with a long touch, while we would have really appreciated being able to rub the finger in one direction or the other to go to the next song or return to the previous one without having to put your hand to the paired smartphone.

Among other things, if you buy them, write down these controls because the user manual is in Chinese and when we write on the net it is really difficult to find the user guide (even the official website does not currently have it, we have them found by chance, in English, in an image attached to the sale advertisement).

They work very well on calls and the autonomy is average: about 3-4 hours of listening to music if they are used together or even 5 if they are used in mono mode, while thanks to the case that recharges them, if fully charged, you can also triple the total autonomy.

Conclusions

Xiaomi Mi AirDots earphones are a good compromise for those looking for a completely wireless model with Bluetooth 5.0, thus benefiting from all the advantages listed above if they are combined with a latest generation smartphone (unfortunately we do not have them, so we cannot confirm you or give you some of our impressions on each of the peculiarities of this new technology).

It must be said that if Bluetooth 5.0 is not necessary and if you are satisfied with headphones that are less beautiful to look at and with buttons instead of touch controls, then at this price you will probably find more satisfying solutions from the point of view of audio quality.
