When it comes to home accessories, be it motion sensors, cleaning accessories, or more commonly lighting, Xiaomi and Mijia hold a particularly important role in the minimal style sector. Xiaomi Mijia MTJD02YL is no exception and “gives” the user one of the most modern desk lamps ever. Here's how it's made and what we think.
The packaging of this peripheral already suggests the dimensions of the lamp. Though carefully folded inside the styrofoam, the package is quite bulky. The lamp is also quite heavy, around 1.5 kg, with a rather impressive base with a diameter of around 14 centimeters. Despite its size, Xiaomi Mijia MTJD02YL is as always an accessory with a strong minimal flavor, with a refined design in its simplicity, which goes well with an absolutely modern environment.
It has a design that the manufacturer calls triaxial, with the possibility of articulating the lamp in different points, in order to adjust the light beam to your liking. The first important adjustment is that of the base: the lamp rod can rotate, so as to leave the base stationary but direct the light where necessary.
Also at the base, a first joint allows you to tilt the lamp to your liking, an operation that can also be repeated with a second joint positioned in the middle of the “stem” and a third place just before the “head” where the luminous LED is present. . This design allows you to orient the lamp according to your needs, even if there is no possibility to rotate the “head” on its own axis.
The possibility of changing the height of the lamp therefore allows the light to be irradiated on a more or less large surface, with an illumination ranging from 25 cm to 180 cm, depending on whether the LED is placed in its lowest position. possible, or in the highest one.
On the base there is a button, which in addition to being clicked, for switching on or off, also has a double click function to activate different modes, such as the Timer, or the Default status. It is this last function that we have considered among the most functional: usually we tend to switch on the lamp always at the same times and always for the same functions, and immediately finding the suitable light tone is one of the most useful functions.
In our case, for example, we use the lamp after dinner and as a writing aid to the Mac: we have therefore set a soft warm light, which we tend to use 90 percent of the time. Just a double click when sitting at the desk is enough to find the right shade.
The button, however, also has the function of a knob, which can be rotated, or rotated and pressed at the same time, to activate various functions. And in fact, if you rotate while pressing, in one direction or another, you will be able to manage the temperature of the light, between hot and cold. This is an excellent solution for use at different times of the day.
In fact, in the evening, a warmer light will be preferable, while in the phases in which it is not yet dark, but the sun has now set, you can opt for a more energetic light. In short, depending on your taste it will be possible to obtain a warm or cold light, between 2500 and 4800K.
By simply turning the same knob, however, you will be able to manage the extent of the light beam. Also in this case, the user can choose whether to obtain a very strong light, or of a lower intensity, depending on the use to be made of it: if in reading mode, for example, a less intense beam is recommended.
In any case, the lamp does not dazzle, and the LED does not bother in the least, even if you look at it directly. From this point of view, the three adjustments in the rods help a lot, to direct the light beam where it is most needed, without hindering the view.
The app, among its functions, also allows you to set the child mode, which limits the temperature up to a maximum of 4000K, helping to protect the sight of the little ones.
Application
The lamp can be controlled not only by means of the multifunctional button described above, but also by applications. There is really spoiled for choice, between Apple's Yeelight, Mi Home and Home apps. Yes, because the lamp can work with both Google and iOS, not only through the proprietary apps, but through support for HomeKit. This means that the light communicates with the Apple ecosystem and it will be possible to control it through the Cupertino application.
Between Yeelight and Mi Home we preferred to use this second one. It seemed to us the most complete app for managing the lamp, with different predefined settings that allow you to immediately activate a certain light, whether it is the PC mode, that reading, or that you want to manually set the hue and intensity of the LED: in this 'last case it is sufficient to go to the main screen of the app and move your fingers as on a trackpad, vertically or horizontally.
The app also allows many automations, being able to interface with other kits of the Chinese manufacturer, for example with the motion sensors, which will allow you to turn it on and off as you pass, or with the door and window sensors, which will allow you to switch it on every time. a certain door opens or closes.
As already mentioned, the lamp also works with Apple House. In this case the configuration is done by scanning the QR code on the lamp.
Conclusions
A real treat. Certainly not among the cheapest desk lamps, but certainly among the most minimal and modern. A unique design, clean, light, but which does not go unnoticed and, above all, which allows you to rotate and direct the light beam as you wish. The fact that it works with different apps, iOS and Android, as well as with Homekit, makes it one of the most versatile and suitable to be inserted in any home automation system.
