Twitter has been the first social network to announce a feature related to NFTs; the possibility of applying these non-fungible tokens as a profile image. Meanwhile, and according to reports, Meta plans to include a platform where you can buy and sell these digital assets through Facebook and Instagram, and now it is YouTube who is jumping on the bandwagon. Susan Wojcicki, CEO of Google's video platform, has confirmed that the company is exploring the possibility of adding features related to NFTs.
In an annual letter to content creators, the CEO of YouTube has mentioned that web3 has served the company as “a source of inspiration to continue innovating on YouTube“. She further suggests that the possibility of making the platform compatible with non-fungible tokens will be something that will mainly benefit creators.
“We're always focused on expanding the YouTube ecosystem to help creators capitalize on emerging technologies, including things like NFTs, while continuing to strengthen and improve the experiences creators and fans have on YouTube.”
At the moment, the CEO of YouTube has not revealed what functions or advances related to NFTs we could see on the platform. However, it is likely to allow features that go beyond displaying NFTs across different channels or profiles. This is something that both Facebook, like Instagram and Twitter, let's remember, want to do.
Will we be able to buy NFTs through YouTube?
Wojcicki, in fact, has also mentioned in his publication YouTube's interest in offering new forms of online commerce. Among them, the possibility of making purchases of a product without leaving a live broadcast, and thanks to the association of online business services. Therefore, it would not be strange to see in the future a function to acquire digital assets without leaving YouTube. All this, with the help of, for example, a third-party platform that allows you to buy or sell NFTs.
“We're investing to make YouTube the next generation of commerce. We've introduced a creator tagging pilot program that gives viewers the opportunity to browse, learn about, and buy products featured in their favorite videos. We're also in the early stages of testing how shopping can be integrated with Shorts.”
Susan Wojcicki, regarding shopping features on YouTube. That YouTube is exploring the possibility of making NFTs compatible with its platforms is very good news for the most enthusiastic of this technology. However, also supposes an added problem. Above all, if we take into account that a large part of the content about the world of cryptocurrencies, web3 and NFTs, is based on spam and scams that only benefit the creators through false promises to the user.
