Although the film could have suffered the fate of many others and reached streaming instead of being delayed so much (and so many times), now we know the reason why it was impossible for this to happen.
The culprit that the film was delayed for so long and did not reach streaming, despite the fact that it had been ready for a long time, is Tom Cruise. According to Variety, the actor and producer flatly refused to allow the film to reach a medium other than theaters. All for the viewer's experience.
A movement that we have already seen in other great films that have been suffering delays since the Covid-19 pandemic. In the case of Maverick, when the pandemic hit, the Top Gun sequel was supposed to be released on June 24, 2020. Those plans had to be rearranged when theaters closed and all the industry took a turn.
